In its continued effort to promote safe practices by all road users, the Jamaica Automobile Association (JAA) donated a Mitsubishi Cantor truck, equipped with props for road safety demonstrations in schools and communities, to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) Traffic Division. This truck will assist the JCF in its education programme for students all over the island.
“We started the Road Safety Public Education Programme at the JCF Traffic Division in the 1950s, and it is one of the longest running sustained road safety initiatives in Jamaica, Superintendent Powell explained. “ Last year, some 30,000 students from more than 100 schools were informed about correct use of the roads through the programme,” he stated.
JAA is also renowned for its work in encouraging road safety awareness since its inception in 1924 including conducting defensive driving classes, providing certification for drivers seeking employment in corporate entities etcetera. One recent campaign was a general awareness programme in 2006 under the theme, ‘Think Before You Drive’, which encouraged safe driving practices.
